Sarah & Salmon by Phyllis Taylor

Congratulations to….

Phyllis Taylor, BWS’ Northwest Coast “affiliate,” was one of 19 artists, from a group of 80, juried into a show at the Cannon Beach Arts Association (Oregon) titled “Contemporary Portraiture.” Juror was Martha Lee, owner of Russo Lee Gallery, Portland.

Works explore what role portraits now play in society with today’s “selfie” culture. Taylor’s work, “Afternoon Catch,” is a portrait of friend Sarah holding a large salmon she’d caught–and looking pretty pleased about it. This was the first juried show Phyllis has entered since moving to Oregon.

Wild Women by Sara Steffey-McQueen

Sara Steffey-McQueen’s linoleum print, “Wild Women,” was juried into the 37th Annual National Print Exhibition at Artlink Contemporary Gallery.  The opening reception is March 31, 6-9 pm, at the gallery, 300 East Main Street in Ft. Wayne.

Bring one disaster painting of your own (we all have them) and any of the following materials you have on hand.  For example: sponge, a few brushes, small water container.  We will provide some tools to share.

The BWS Spring Calendar will be distributed and it’s a full one!

Color Theory Workshop

Robin Edmundson will be facilitating a 3-day Color Experience at MoonTree Studios in Plymouth, Indiana, April 21-23, 2017.  If you’ve been waiting for a chance to learn some color theory, and then have the time really run with it, this is your chance. There will be a half day class on basic color theory to jump start you, then you’ll have 2 1/2 days to explore color in your own direction. Robin is there to cheer you on, help with more color theory, brainstorm, bounce ideas off of, etc. We conclude each day with a “show and tell” to look at what others are doing with other media, share progress, ask questions, share frustrations, and brainstorm. You’ll be encouraged to experiment and explore things you haven’t tried before, and explorations will be flexible enough to allow for change in direction if desired. Our emphasis is on the color exploration, not on completing a set of products by the end of the experience. It’ll be a small-ish group between 6-8 folks in any area of visual art or fiber art. $320 for the three days [$290 if you’re a member of MoonTree Studios] (For example explorations and materials list, see their website – link below.)  Here’s the link to the class: http://www.moontreestudios.org/index.php/test-store/2015-09-11-19-14-42#!/Color-Exploration-in-2D-and-3D-Visual-Art-with-Robin-Edmundson/p/72672647/category=19838035 Robin will have MoonTree Studios catalogs at the February meeting so you can see all the great classes they offer.

February 2016 Meeting Minutes

Bloomington Watercolor Society
Meeting Minutes
Feb. 8, 2016
Call to order: Cassidy Young, first vice president, called the meeting to order at 6:10 p.m. Cassidy announced that we have three new members: Kitty Garlock, Lynne Gilliatt, and Penny Lulich.
Guest Speaker: Cassidy introduced Cate Whetzel, the program developer at the T.C. Steele Historic Site. Cate talked about the T.C. Steele Art Out event that will be held Oct. 7–8 in Bloomington. The Art Out is a project for the Indiana Bicentennial, and part of an Indiana Master Grant. The goal of the grant is getting Bloomington people to know about T.C. Steele.
There will be a paint out on Oct. 8. Cate would like Bloomington Watercolor Society members to participate. All kinds of artists will be invited to do representations of Bloomington, including downtown and the campus. The Indiana Plein Air Painters Association artists, and IU students are also invited. Artists of all levels and ages are welcome. Artists can paint anytime from 7 a.m.–3 p.m. Artists will gather in Dunn Meadow from 3–5 p.m. to show their work. It will be a chance for people to see and buy art. There will be a tent with food, music, and performers from The Breeze Bends the Grass.
The T.C. Steele Historic Site is partnering with the IU Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts for the Art Out. Betsy Stirratt from the Grunwald Gallery of Art is helping with the campus part of the event. There will be tours of Steele’s works in the Indiana Memorial Union. Steele was IU’s first artist in residence.

Jeanne Dutton asked what BWS could do. Cate said individuals could commit to the program.
Tricia Wente said that people might carry in works to the tent that weren’t created that day. Betty Wagoner said that Cate might want to limit the paintings in the tent to one for each person.
Claude Cookman said artists might want to paint at the farmers market to engage people. He also suggested that information about Steele be available.
It was suggested that the Oct. 8 paint out be called an outdoor art event. Cate is calling the event an “art out” to involve non-painters.
Jeanne Dutton said BWS will help promote the event through Facebook, Brush Strokes, and email.
The current Artist-in-Residence at T.C. Steele is Elizabeth Seagull Heeter. She will offer a watercolor and paper cutting workshop on Feb. 20 from 2–3:30 p.m. Registration is required.

Monthly Meeting
Monday, February 8, 6:00 pm
First Christian Church
Corner of Kirkwood and Washington
Bloomington, Indiana

After the usual short business meeting, the program begins…and this one is going to be fun!
BWS has happily added many new artists recently to its roster…artists not only new to BWS, but new to Bloomington. So, in order to meet each other, we will be doing “Speed Dating!”
Carol Rhodes, 2nd VP, who has extensive experience coordinating workshops for IU and national organizations, will lead us as we get to know each other.  Here’s what she has to say:

“Over the past few years, speed networking has emerged as an entertaining and humorous activity for getting to know people. Speed networking takes place in a room layout that configures people in pairs. As soon as participants have assembled, an event leader announces an art-related topic and then signals the beginning of timed conversations. At the beginning of each “round robin,” the first person in each pair introduces him/herself and says something about the topic. At the halfway point, the conversation switches to the other person, who then adds their perspective on the same topic. After a 4-to-5-minute total period for each topic, the event leader indicates that it is time to move on to the next person and to talk about a new art topic. At the end of the event, everyone has made new artist friends, most of them with people they would not ordinarily have approached. It’s a little noisy, but it’s very jovial!  Ideas for topics are welcomed.”
Suggested topics may include, “Why I love watercolor,” or, “Tell me about your background in art.”

Steve Dawson Sailboat

“Sailboat,” watercolor by Steve Dawson.

Steve is a prolific and very talented journaling artist and brings a special inspiration to his classes.  For his bio and complete workshop details, please go to BloomingtonWatercolor.org.
Description: “In this workshop, we are going to explore Art Journaling and how we can use it as a way to bring Art into our lives on a daily basis.  Art Journaling is a no-stress and pressure-free way to relax, experiment, and have fun!  And, by keeping our art journaling supplies close by, any time is art journaling time.  In the hectic and busy world we all live in, Art Journaling is an easy and inexpensive way to remember to have fun and explore our world through Art.  Over time, the little journals and sketchbooks we keep become treasures that chronicle our Illustrated Life.”
Workshop Supplies: Watercolor paints, brushes, ink pens, pencil, ruler or straightedge, and something from your studio or junk drawer that you haven’t used in a while.  We can sometimes find inspiration by experimenting with a different medium or tool.  And, lastly, a fun attitude – we are going to tap into our inner 8 year old and have a blast playing in our art journal sandbox!

February 17, Hutton Honors Building and IU Union: Tour of IU Paintings.  Host: Kathy Barton.
February 24, Studio Paint-in or Paint-out at Donna’s.  12 Noon – 3pm.  Host: Donna Whitsitt.
UP will meet this winter on Wednesdays from 10am-1pm, unless otherwise specified.  The remaining winter season includes February and March, and the March schedule will be announced soon.  Stay tuned!

wavelogo_sm_transpt_072_rotatedMONTHLY MEETING

Monday, January 11
6:00pm
First Christian Church
Corner of Washington and Kirkwood
Bloomington, Indiana

Working on your Art of Chocolate painting? Bring it along for suggestions, gentle critiques, and just to share and inspire. After the business meeting, at which the spring calendar will be distributed, Signature member Linda Meyer-Wright will present the following program:

Intuitive Abstracts
We use intuition to express ourselves in creating an abstract collage.  Using intuition can mean many things – letting go of control – allowing the inner child to come out and play – listening to your muse – just trusting yourself.  And, although we will be working intuitively, that doesn’t mean you don’t need to plan or prepare.  Here are some things to bring with you:

  • Old watercolor/acrylic paintings on paper.  We will use one as the support for the collage and the other may be torn into bits to use as collage pieces.
  • Your paints & brushes.  Include an old cheap brush to use as a glue brush.
  • Other media you like to use – such as pens, markers, watercolor or other pencils, watercolor crayons, oil pastels, inks, etc.
  • Adhesive.  Bring whatever you have on hand.  Some favorites of collage artists are Yes! Paste, Perfect Paper Adhesive (PPA) or gel medium.  I use Golden Gel Medium and/or Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid.
  • Papers – this is where you get to clean house.  Look for whatever speaks to you – tissue paper – newspaper – gelli prints – sewing patterns – old or weird books – maps – paint sample cards – greeting cards – magazines – tea bags/coffee filters – labels – string – threads – security or other envelopes – junk mail – boxes – cardboard  phone books – catalogs – sheet music – letters – school assignments – this fabric – the list is endless.  If it is anything you treasure, make a photo copy.

You should not need to go out and buy anything.  Unless of course there is something you really, really want and need a good excuse.
