Art Supply Scholarship

The Bloomington Watercolor Society (BWS) is pleased and proud to invest in the future of art by awarding a $500 scholarship to help a promising visual art student with supply costs.

The BWS scholarship will be awarded to an MCCSC high school senior who is pursuing a degree in visual fine arts, arts education, architecture or design from an accredited college, university, or school of design.  The recipient must graduate from an MCCSC high school with a minimum 3.0 g.p.a. before July 1 of the year in which the scholarship will be awarded.

The scholarship award of $500 will be paid to the student for the purpose of purchasing art supplies necessary for the curriculum in which the student is enrolled, and will be awarded through the Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools (FMCCS).

The scholarship application packet, which is submitted completely online, must include:

1, Completed application

2, A statement of goals and purpose.

3, Digital portfolio

The portfolio should include five (5) labeled images of the student’s best work completed within the last 24 months. These images should reflect a body of work that shows consistency in the chosen medium, demonstrates ability and serious pursuit of art, and original creativity. 

A second set of five (5) images may also be submitted which support or reveal strength in another artistic medium.

All work must be original and from original sources, meaning work from a student’s personal photography plus any personal imaginative works.
Each image should be labeled with the student’s name, title, date, size and media using the following format:
Student Name _Title of Image_Date Created_Size_Medium

4, Transcript(s)

Official transcript of high school credits showing a minimum g.p.a. of 3.0.

5, 2 Letters of Recommendation

Letter of recommendation from a current or past art teacher familiar with the student’s artistic qualifications, and one from another professional educator.

6, Student Bio, if applicable

Information regarding exhibits, awards, publications, etc. related to the student’s art history

Deadline: Please return the complete application packet online by the designated deadline (March 31 of the application year).

Selection
After review of all images and information submitted with the application form, selection will be recommended by a jury of BWS members to the FMCCS, and FMCCS’s scholarship committee will make the final decision.   Applications will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Goals and Purpose
  • Originality of art
  • Composition and Design
  • Use of the chosen medium
  • Overall presentation and Body of work

Notification
The decision will be announced at the student’s high school awards ceremony in the spring of graduation.  A certificate will be awarded.

Distribution
Once registered in his/her chosen college, and verification has been provided to FMCCS, the student will receive a gift card to a vendor of fine art supplies.

Administrative questions should be addressed to FMCCS.

Bonus Opportunity:  As part of the award, and if the student wishes, BWS will also provide an educational opportunity for the student by sponsoring an exhibit in a local gallery.  BWS will work with the student to organize a gallery exhibit the first or second summer after graduation from high school.  BWS will provide professional technical support, guidance, publicity and an opening reception.  The student will be responsible for the following:

  • All works must be prepared for exhibition in a professional manner and meet the guidelines set out by the Gallery.
  • All works must be for sale.  The student will receive the proceeds from any sale less the commission required by the Gallery.
  • The student artist must attend the reception.
